About the Program
Each year, about half of all line-of-duty firefighter deaths are attributed to heart attacks, which makes heart disease the number one cause of firefighter fatalities. America's first responders need to be proactive to protect themselves and their love ones against this severe threat. The nature of being a first responder puts your heart and health under great stress, and so it is critically important that you make the commitment to keep your body and heart strong. The good news is that there are changes you can make to your lifestyle that can help decrease your risk of becoming a statistic.

The NVFC designed the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program to promote fitness, nutrition, and health awareness within America's fire and emergency services. It is the nation's only heart attack prevention program targeted at all firefighters and EMS personnel, both volunteer and career. Launched in 2003, the program includes the Fired Up for Fitness Challenge, the Heart-Healthy Resource Guide, the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Cookbook, the E-news monthly electronic newsletter, an interactive trade show booth featuring health screenings and important resources, health and wellness workshops, and much more.

The NVFC is now asking departments and personnel to adopt the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program. By registering with the program, departments set up a page that allows their personnel to participate in the Fired Up For Fitness Challenge, post success stories and photos, and access a message board that connects them to a nationwide community of health-conscious first responders. First responders who adopt the program pledge to focus on their health as well as encourage good health among their fellow department members.

Any questions about the program can be addressed to the NVFC office at 1-888-ASK-NVFC (275-6832) or nvfcoffice@nvfc.org.
