Honor Fallen Firefighters By Protecting Your Health

Every October, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. The event is an opportunity for the nation to remember and pay tribute to those who have fallen while serving and protecting their communities. Thousands of guests, including NVFC Chairman Philip C. Stittleburg, attended the 2008 Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, MD, on October 4-5. Read full article.

NVFC Hosts Second Successful Health and Fitness Advocate Workshop

The NVFC Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program held the second Health and Fitness Advocate Workshop on September 20-21 at the NVFC headquarters in Greenbelt, MD. Personnel from departments across the country attended the session to learn how to implement and maintain a successful health and fitness program within their department.Read full article.

October is Healthy Lung Month

Breathing is easy to take for granted – unless you are one of the 35 million Americans who suffer from a lung disease. In order to increase awareness of issues relating to the maintenance of healthy lungs, the American Lung Association sponsors Healthy Lung Month each October. Read full article.

EKHO Donates Portion of Proceeds to the NVFC

Firefighters push themselves to the limits every day. Whether responding to an incident, training, or working out, your body and heart experience major stress. To prepare yourself for this physical intensity, monitor your heart-health and strengthen it through targeted workouts. In 2007, EKHO Heart Rate Monitors partnered with the NVFC to help firefighters become heart-healthy by donating a percentage of all profits from sales generated from the NVFC Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program.Read full article.

Heart-Healthy Tips: Breaking Through Barriers to Getting Active

NVFC Heart-Healthy Tip of the Day

Would you like to do more physical activity but do not know how to make it a part of your life? Below are some common barriers to physical activity and ways to overcome them. After you read them, try writing down the top two or three barriers that you face. Then write down solutions that you think will work for you.
