NVFC Employee Wellness Initiative Recognized in Forbes Magazine Supplement

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently recognized the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) as a Start! Fit-Friendly Company. This program recognizes employers who go above and beyond when it comes to their employees’ health. The NVFC was subsequently featured as a Gold level Fit-Friendly Company in a special AHA supplement, “The Healthy Workplace,” in the October 27 issue of Forbes magazine.Read full article.

NVFC Releases Updated Health and Wellness Guide

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), in partnership with the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), has released an updated edition of the Health and Wellness Guide for the Volunteer Fire and Emergency Services. NVFC Staff Walk for Heart Disease

On November 1, staff members from the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) participated in a 3.1-mile American Heart Association (AHA) Start! Greater Washington Heart Walk, held on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The event was one of more than 450 Heart Walks the AHA is holding across the country this year to raise money to fight the nation’s number 1 and number 3 killers - heart disease and stroke. The goal of the Greater Washington Heart Walk was to raise $2 million for heart disease and stroke research. Read full article.

Great American Smokeout is November 20: Make a Plan to Quit

Every November, smokers across the country take the first step toward giving up cigarettes by participating in the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Great American Smokeout. With all the resources available to help smokers quit, there has never been a better time to quit smoking and enjoy the health benefits. November is National Diabetes Month

Most people with diabetes have risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol that can lead to heart disease and stroke. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), when combined with diabetes, these risk factors add up to big trouble. In fact, more than 65 percent of people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke. With diabetes, heart attacks occur earlier in life and often result in death. By managing diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol, people with diabetes can reduce their risk. Read full article.

Healthy holiday eating has never tasted better. This Thanksgiving, use recipes from the National Volunteer Fire Council’s (NVFC) Heart-Healthy Firefighter Cookbook for easy-to-make recipes that are good to your heart and taste great, too. The Cookbook, which won the 2008 MarCom Gold Award for excellence, is part of the NVFC's national effort to decrease the risk of heart attack among firefighters and emergency services personnel through proper nutrition, fitness, and health education. EKHO Heart Rate Monitors Donates Portion of Proceeds to the NVFC

Firefighters push themselves to the limits every day. Whether responding to an incident, training, or working out, your body and heart experience major stress. To prepare yourself for this intensity, you should monitor your heart-health and strengthen it through targeted workouts. In 2007, EKHO Heart Rate Monitors began a partnership with the NVFC to help firefighters become heart-healthy. As part of the partnership, EKHO donates a percentage of all profits from sales generated from the NVFC Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program.Read full article.
