Staying Healthy During a Flu Pandemic

The recent outbreak of H1N1 (swine flu) in Mexico, and now the U.S. and throughout the world, is a reminder that everyone must do their part to help in preventing the spread of influenza. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released information and resources to help citizens and health care providers get educated and stay healthy to prevent the further spread of the swine flu or any pandemic flu. NVFC Health and Safety Committee Participates in Focus Group on Firefighter Health

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) Health and Safety Committee participated in a firefighter health focus group as part of a research project partnership between the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) and the NVFC. The NVFC Health and Safety Committee is comprised of NVFC Board Members, who are fire service leaders from around the country. The focus group met on March 31 in Alexandria, VA, in conjunction with the NVFC Spring Board Meeting. Read full article.

Fire/EMS Safety, Health, and Survival Week is June 14-20: Take Responsibility for Your Well-Being

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has partnered with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) to promote the 2008 Fire/EMS Safety, Health, and Survival Week, held June 22-28. The theme for the week, "Protect Yourself: Your Safety, Health, and Survival Are Your Responsibility" encourages chiefs and fire/EMS personnel to focus on what they personally can do to manage risk and enhance their health and safety. Heart-Healthy Tips: American Stroke Month

Educate yourself and your department about stroke during May, American Stroke Month. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and many survivors are left with permanent disabilities. According to the American Stroke Association, which sponsors American Stroke Month, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. You can help lower your chance of a fatal or debilitating stroke by knowing the warning signs and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Read full article.
