Maintain Your Heart-Healthy Lifestyle Throughout the Year

The 3rd annual National Firefighter Health Week was held on August 17-21. This was an opportunity for you to focus on your total health – heart, mind, and body. Hopefully you used this week as an opportunity to focus on your own health as well as the health and wellness of your department. Fire departments nationwide focused on their health and wellness during National Firefighter Health Week on August 17-21. Many departments and emergency organizations conducted special activities and events corresponding with the week’s daily topics, which highlighted issues such as mental/behavioral health, heart-health, and fitness and nutrition. New Study Recommends Reduced Intake of Added Sugars

A new American Heart Association scientific statement provides specific guidance on limiting the consumption of added sugars and provides information about the relationship between excess sugar intake and metabolic abnormalities, adverse health conditions, and shortfalls in essential nutrients. The statement, published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, provides for the first time the association’s recommendations on specific levels and limits on the consumption of added sugars. Register Now for the Heart of America Emergency Service Games

There is still time to register for the 2009 “Heart of America” Emergency Service Games, held September 24-27, 2009, in Wichita, KS. The games are hosted by the Kansas Police and Fire Athletic Association to promote a common goal of better health and wellness for the Midwest’s first responders by engaging in activity and sport.
