Take the Fired Up For Fitness Challenge
As a firefighter, it's important that you can meet the physical demands of being on duty. By being heart-healthy and physically fit, you're better equipped to help those who depend on you. That's why the NVFC Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program developed the Fired Up For Fitness Challenge, an interactive fitness program that allows firefighters and emergency personnel to track their hours of activity and receive incentive rewards. NVFC Releases Resource to Help Departments Obtain Sponsors for Health and Wellness Programs
The NVFC, through its Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program, has released a toolkit to assist emergency service departments in securing sponsors to support a department health and wellness program. The toolkit is available for download as part of the Adopt the Program initiative on the Heart-Healthy Firefighter web site at www.healthy-firefighter.org. Provisional Report Shows Decrease in Number of Line-of-duty Deaths Due to Heart Attack
Heart Disease remains leading cause of on-duty firefighter fatalities
The United States Fire Administration (USFA) announced there were 114 line-of-duty firefighter fatalities in the United States in 2008. Preliminary estimates indicate that heart attacks and strokes were responsible for the deaths of 50 firefighters (43.8%) in 2008. This shows a decrease from 54 of the 118 (45.7%) firefighters in 2007. However, heart disease remains the leading cause of on-duty firefighter deaths. Read full article.
